The silliness of boys

So everyone always says girls are so silly and chatty, but after four weeks of teaching the boys solo, I have to say they are just as goofy. I have to remind them to be quiet far more than I ever did with the girls. You make one joke or say something slightly off topic, and they’re gone. And there’s maybe a three second window to pull them back in.

Today, they made me laugh. I asked what the bookstore hours were so I could get a a St. Mary’s t-shirt to wear to the big game against our rival, DuBourg, on Friday. One of the football players said he had an extra and asked me to wear his number. I had almost forgot how big of deal it was to wear a guy’s number. I also got asked to hang out after the game. Ummm….let me think about that and let me think hard: No.

Other funny thing….one student swears I look like a friend’s sister. He’s going to bring in a picture to show me. I’m not really sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

I’ve spent the last 24 hours going through many potential college essays. What have I learned? Two of my students LOVE art. They need to do a bit more in their writing to really show me that they love it, but I was intrigued to see boys so passionate about something often called “feminine”. Secondly, a few of my students really, really look up to their older brothers. It was really neat reading about those relationships and seeing how much and in what ways they look up to those older siblings. And third, and definitely the most heart-breaking, I learned how hard this economic recession has been for some of these families. I read two just heart-breaking stories that almost made me cry, and once final edits are in, I’m sure I will cry.

I met with the assistant principal, and I was asked again when Mark will know where we’ll be next year. I hate it. I hate finding a place, starting to fall in love with the community and students, and knowing the whole time I won’t be back. And it’s even worse that I have zero control over what cities we live in. Oh well.
