A New Semester!!

I probably said this last year, but one of my goals this year is to write more. I don’t care if it’s on here, writing a book, or journaling. Must do it.

Today was the first day of a new semester. It was SO nice to see so many returning faces. I’d say 1/3 to 1/2 of my students this semester were in my ENG 1313 last semester. I’m trying something new this semester…something I have always wanted to do with my classes. I’ve created a theme of social justice for ENG 1314. Lucky for me, one of my co-workers wanted to do the same thing. I’ve pasted in readings for my course syllabus, but I’m still in the tweaking phase.

In passing, I told my students today why I fell in love with journalism. I loved the idea of being a voice for someone who didn’t have it. I loved that news organizations can provide objective pictures of scenarios of those who are forgotten or mistreated, and just maybe their stories will create change and action.

I learned today from a colleague that there are so many murals and other things here in San Antonio that I could weave into my class. I feel like I need more time. (Don’t we all?) I probably won’t get this class designed the way I want this semester, but maybe I’ll find some good pieces that will make an awesome class for the future.

After my years of working in campus ministry and living in North St. Louis, service and social justice are still close to my heart. There are so many things wrong with this world, and I do truly believe if people care, we just may be able to fix part of it. (This is probably why Mark thinks I should go into politics.) I want my students to see argumentative writing that will change them the way my Jesuit education changed me. I’m hoping I can help create a few men or women for others. Fingers crossed…but I’m super excited about this semester. 🙂 If anyone has any documentaries, essays, or art that they think I should see, comment below or message me. Help me change these students’ minds and hearts!
